Noted Seattle attorney Anne Bremner pleaded guilty Wednesday to drunk driving and acknowledged she has bi-polar disorder.
At King County District Court, in Shoreline, the 52-year old Bremner apologized, saying "I made a mistake."
Bremner had been trying to prevent release of a King County Sheriff's deputy's arrest report from June 4th. She says she was trying to keep secret her bipolar condition. "I think that's been stigmatized over the years and I didn't want that to be in the public," says Bremner.
A judge fined Bremner $5,000. She'll serve two days in jail and use an interlock device that prevents her from driving her car if she's drunk.
Bremner says her arrest on her birthday was a "perfect storm." She believes she was manic because of a problem with her medication for bipolar disorder. She says she was also in a traffic accident that night. "That coupled with having a minor amount of alcohol was a perfect storm which led to a situation where I believe the police officer honestly believed I was impaired," says Bremner.
Bremner says she plans to apologize to the sheriff's deputy who arrested her.
Bremner says it's humbling "to see the system from the other side, especially because I've spent my entire career representing police officers and people from the court system," says Bremner.
Bremner says she plans to advocate for drunk driving victim's panels in all high schools. "It's been so public that I wanted to use this court hearing today and my situation to reach out to people and say the consequences of this are horrific and I want to advocate that one drink is one drink too many when you drive."
