A standoff that lasted more than seven hours in North Seattle ended after a mentally ill man tried to push a refrigerator out of his apartment window.
Seattle Police Detective Renee Witt said officers arrived at the scene around 5:45 a.m. after receiving a report of a man throwing household objects out his third floor window at Midvale Avenue N. and N. 137th Street. Police said the man had already thrown a microwave onto the street below.
When officers observed the man toss a futon out of the window, they called in hostage negotiators and a SWAT team.
"At some point, the gentleman tried to toss a refrigerator out of the window," Witt said. "He was not successful in doing so."
At around 1:45 p.m., the SWAT team entered the residence and arrested the man. He will undergo a mental evaluation at Harborview Medical Center.
