Earlier this week, we told you about a gastric bypass surgery kit you could pick up on Amazon.com. But if bulking up is your fitness goal for 2010, the Seattle-based online retailer has something for that too. The only problem: it's illegal.

"Finding them a mouse-click away from the general public seems incredibly dangerous," said Oliver Catlin, vice president and chief financial officer of Anti-Doping Research, a Los Angeles based non-profit.

"They" are anabolic steroids. Once the wares of shady characters skulking around gym locker rooms, research conducted by Catlin and his father, Don Catlin, shows they can now be ordered easily through the Seattle-based online retailer.

The Catlins say they have analyzed four products purchased on Amazon.com, all claiming to be legal muscle-building supplements. Three of them contained "significant amounts" of anabolic steroids.

"Amazement, I think, is a good way to describe it," Oliver Catlin told KIRO-FM.

One of the drugs discovered was Madol, which is on the FDA's list of controlled substances. It is illegal to sell anabolic steroids as part of dietary supplements.

Catlin said companies sometimes disguise a product's ingredients by using a variation of the substance's chemical name. That was the case for one of the products they tested, made by a company called Competitive Edge Labs, he said.

In a statement on its website, the company claims it has discontinued sales on those products. However, according to Catlin, the products he purchased had fresh expiration dates.

Catlin said he has notified Amazon, which likely did not know it was selling illegal drugs, as well as the FDA.

"Our contention is that if they can lead to liver failure, they should not be a mouse-click away from the general public," Catlin said.

Amazon did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
