The president and first lady Michelle Obama convened a conference on preventing bullying Thursday, and The Stranger's Dan Savage was invited.

Savage posted on The Stranger blog saying he would be in attendance at the event in D.C.

Savage was responsible for the "It Gets Better" campaign that gained mass attention on YouTube.

The "It Gets Better Project" is a YouTube channel moderated by Savage, where gay and lesbian adults post videos with a positive message with the idea that no matter what gay and lesbian teens maybe facing now, it can get better. President Obama posted his own 'It Gets Better' message to gay teens on the YouTube page.

At the conference in D.C. on Thursday, Obama told young people that they shouldn't have to accept bullying as an inevitable part of growing up.

"If there's one goal, it's to dispel the myth that bullying is just a harmless rite of passage," Obama said. "As adults, we can lose sight of how hard it can be sometimes to be a kid."

The White House says one-third of the nation's students, or 13 million children, have been bullied.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
