Brown on platoons and suits
Michael Saunders is out of the lineup again today because of his shoulder but Daren Brown said that he would have had him in the lineup against CC Sabathia if he had been healthy. Brown is not one who believes in platooning young players.
"Looking at these guys as possible every day guys that is not a guy you want to platoon. I am not a fan of platooning young kids anyway. I think we need to find out, can they play every day?"
As for protecting young players from tough same-handed pitchers Brown said that depends on how they are going at the time but for the most part, he is going to have them out there.
"I have seen them all at the minor league level. We don't do that. We expect if they are going to be a guy, a prospect, they are going to face 'em all. When you are looking at young kids as every day players they are not going to platoon. If they are that type of player we need to find that out."
Moving on. Everyone was still oohing and ahhing at Russell Branyan's fourth deck homerun last night. The skipper cannot even talk about it without laughing it was so ridiculous. Come to think of it, there was a lot of laughter in the clubhouse this morning, not because of the homerun, rather because of an interesting suit in one of the lockers.
Hanging in Garrett Olson's locker was a summer suit that included salmon colored linen trousers and a salmoney, turquoisey, with some khaki thrown in plaid blazer that I thought would fit in with the country club set (John Wetteland said he was channeling Rodney Dangerfield) while Brad Adam of FSN said it was more of a Miami shuffleboard look. Completing the ensemble were white shoes and a white belt of course.
The outfit looked so interesting hanging in the locker that Brian Sweeney actually took it out and put on to model for his teammates. Olson will take a lot of flack for this outfit later on the plane today. He should know that only Felix can pull off the white shoe look.
One more suit story for you and it comes from the skipper interview today with Dave Niehaus on the pre game show. Brown tells Dave that he is leaving New York with a new addition to his wardrobe.
"The first night in here there is a New York fan who sits to the right of the dugout and after Branyan hits the three run homerun he tells him if he hits another he would give him a free suit. About 3 or 4 innings later, Russell hits one out to centerfield and comes back to the dugout and hollars, "46 long!" on his way down the steps. Russell comes over a couple innings later and said he didn't know if he would be able to get over to the place but said that he would like to take care of the manager, so we went over yesterday and Branyan got me a free suit and I am very appreciative of it."
