Michael Saunders to have MRI Thursday
Monday's lineup:
Ichiro
Figgins
Branyan
Gutierrez
Kotchman
Moore
Langerhans
Tuiasosopo
Woodward
Jose Lopez and Josh Wilson are out of the lineup as just "days off," according to Daren Brown.
Michael Saunders is a different case. He has not been able to play on a regular basis since running into the wall last month and now the Mariners are going to take a closer look at his shoulder when the team gets back to Seattle. He will undergo an MRI Thursday.
"We are just taking it day by day and trying to get it better," Saunders said in the visitors clubhouse today. "We will find out some info Thursday and hopefully it is something that can't getting any worse from playing and I will just have to deal with it."
Saunders, who had surgery on the same shoulder three years ago to repair a torn labrum is hoping that what he is feeling right now is just a normal end of the season pain not unlike a ding or a dent most players have and play through this time of year. While it is scary that it is the same shoulder he injured before, he is encouraged by what he can do right now. Throwing is not an issue nor is hitting off a tee. This is much different from the situation three years ago.
"Back then when I went to throw the ball I felt a stabbing pain in shoulder," he said. "It got to the point where I could barely throw."
Full labrum tears are rare in position players, but Saunders pitched up until he was 19 years old and was told that is what probably led to the injury. He told me that he believes what he is dealing with right now is centered around a muscle rather than the labrum. Tests after his collision with the wall indicated that the labrum was in good shape.
"After that game strenght tests came back positive, they were saying they didn't think it had anything to do with the labrum," he said. "Now we are just hoping for the best and hoping it is just day by day and nothing will come of it and it won't get any worse."
We will learn more later this week.
