The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Director Peter Jackson must do "spectacular" in his sleep. Even with the thinnest of premises - this second Hobbit movie is reportedly based on a mere five chapters of that children's book - Jackson can spin a nearly three-hour film that's chock-full of stunning action sequences and extended bits of special effects wizardry.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
"Catching Fire" hits all the necessary plot points but it registers none of the atmosphere of terror that this dystopian tale requires. And it's so thin on characterization that none of the relationships resonates either, no matter how dramatic the emotions or desperate the circumstances.

Whether tethered or strapped in jet packs, these astronauts are floating through space with nothing between their spacesuits and the great empty beyond of outer space.
