Seahawks position watch
By Liz Mathews
With 10 Seahawks not practicing today, Carroll and crew had to make some adjustments today as far as game planning for Sunday.
Here is the position breakdown as of now:
Quarterback - Matt Hasselbeck (head) took another rest day and is waiting to be cleared to practice due to his concussion. During his noon press conference, Pete Carroll reported that Hasselbeck is "feeling pretty good and we'll look for him to practice tomorrow." Carroll also said that "we have to give him a good day break – which he can use at this time of year anyway."
Both backup Charlie Whitehurst and practice squad member Zac Robinson took reps today with the team. Michael Robinson (hamstring), the current active 3rd string QB, sat today out as well and is listed as "day to day."
Wide Receiver - Neither Mike Williams (knee) nor Golden Tate (ankle) participated this afternoon. Williams has a thigh bruise above his knee, but is expected to be ready by the weekend. Tate is still "hobbling around" per Carroll and is doubtful for Sunday. The Seahawks re-signed Ruvell Martin to the roster this morning to add some much-needed depth.
"We brought in Ruvell Martin, a guy that we had had earlier in the year," said Carroll. "It's a guy that we trust and he knows our stuff and he’ll be here to try and help us and give us some depth."
Offensive Line - Russell Okung (ankle) did not participate today as anticipated. "We had hoped that he would practice today, but yesterday wasn't a productive enough day for him to practice today," said Carroll. Chester Pitts will work at left tackle for now as the team is unsure whether or not Tyler Polumbus (knee) is a go for this week.
Mike Gibson will be taking reps at left guard. Gibson has played at all five positions on the line and is available to backup where needed. Breno Giacomini may be called upon to fill in as well.
Chris Spencer (neck) sat the day out with a neck injury, but is anticipated to get the start.
Defensive Line - It was reported today that Colin Cole (ankle) will not play this Sunday. "Colin Cole is going to miss this game," said Carroll. "He's got a serious ankle sprain; it's going to take him awhile. So he'll miss a couple weeks."
Kentwan Balmer is expected to start at the end position now that Red Bryant has been placed on the IR with a MCL tear. "It starts off with Kentwan Balmer going to the five-technique spot," said Carroll. "He's been playing in and out of there and backed us up for a number of weeks. So he'll jump right in to play where Red was playing."
Both Junior Siavii and recently acquired Frank Okam will play at the nose tackle position. "One thing I do know about Frank is that he's really big, that part was easily assessed," said Carroll. "So we like the big guys and hopefully he'll be able to help us in there."
The Seahawks also signed defensive end Jay Richardson today to help shore up the line.
Brandon Mebane (calf), out the last couple of weeks, should return to practice later this week. "Mebane is going to try to get some work done before the week is out," said Carroll. "We think he's going to play in the game."
Cornerback- Both Kelly Jennings and Walter Thurmond were full participants today and should both be available for Sunday.
Special Teams - Leon Washington will be returning both kickoffs and punts this week against the Giants. Having replaced Tate in last week's game as the punt returner, Washington will continue in that role at least until Tate is deemed healthy.
