TBTL People Helpers Alert!! Did Listener Wes' Niece Eat Meth?
I got this email the other day:
...Luke, as a devoted Ten, When I was faced with this riddle, I could think of no one better to help than you and the Tens of listeners.
I earnestly need your help in solving a mystery. Recently, while at the park with my 2 year old niece I noticed she had picked something off the ground and was trying to put it into her mouth. This is in no way unusual behavior. Calmly, I reached down to extract whatever might be inhabiting her mouth when I saw it. She had a small plastic cylinder, filled with some crystalline substance and covered with a balled-up gauze lid. I've shown it to those close to me while we try to come to a consensus on what it is. None of my close friends or family have had extensive drug experience so I don't consider any of them authorities on the matter. That's why I've come to you and the Tens for help. I must know if this is crystal meth or just pieces of plastic so I can continue my life! If any listener has the capability of testing the substance I would be willing to do a little sleuthing. Any help would be much appreciated!...
The good news is that Wes' niece seems okay. Kinda.
...P.S. My niece is fine (although she does keep asking for her crank back)...
So What do you guys think it is?

Growing up in rural-ish Virginia as an asthmatic, allergic kid, I have had my share of experience with stings and bug bites. We used to keep these on hand for the summer. It's a Sting-Kill, or similar product, for relieving the pain of bee stings and insect bites.

The medicine is contained inside the capsule, and is released when the middle is squeezed. The shards that look like they could be crystal meth are just the inner lining that was shattered when the tube was squeezed.
According to a chemical dependency professional that I know, the appearence is consistant with crystal meth. Which does not mean that it is, but that the little girl should be taken to the doctor and checked out.
Ok, so I am calling for a judgement free zone here...

That being said, this isn't meth.
Meth is a cream to beige color. Plus as Aaron pointed out meth looks like pieces of broken glass and is pointy.
This may be crack, but crack is also cream looking and looks like small chunks of crumbled gypsum drywall.
More than likely this is good old fashioned cocaine like grandpa and grandma used to toot! Especially if it's a fine dust. It could also be heroin, but it's hard to tell with the color under the veil. I'd suggest asking Bubs to confirm whether or not it is heroin.
Either way I would throw this out because the last thing you want to do is catch a case for carrying around someone else's dead soldier because you're curious to the contents. The cops will roll you up regardless of whether or not it was yours.
but seriously, it really does look like a broken vial of Sting Kill. There isn't any powder or residue. The white at the end is consistent with the gauze applicator. The shards come out when the plastic tube is squeezed to release the medicine. So, instead of cocaine, it is more likely benzocaine. If the baby acts affected, take her to the doctor. But, unless the kid climbs in a tree and acts like a leprechaun, it probably wasn't coke.
Well this is quite a way to start the day. I'm voting for Sting Kill, and am terrified that it's really high quality meth. Check your local listings for a $20 anonymous drug purity test center. These guys do an amazing public service, and could do so much more if we'd stop pretending that drugs will cease to exist if we keep them as illegal as possible. Whether it's bovine growth hormones or neurotoxins, junkies and silly people alike should have the right to test their vices for terror.
a medical adhesive for making sure bandages and Steri-Strips are held down on the skin. You squeeze the vial until it breaks and then the glue wets the cotton tip and then you apply it. Pics to follow (I just happen to have some on me) but you can google Mastisol.
I agree with those saying it is sting-kill. I had forgotten about it, but when I worked as a raft guide we were required to have those in our first aid kits and they looked exactly like that.
