A celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBTQ) Pride kicks off in Seattle this weekend, with a raucous parade as a highlight of the events. Here’s a recent history of gay rights events in Washington.

1971 - Women's commission Seattle
April 6, 1971: City Council committee names first Seattle Women's Commission members.

It's role in the beginning was simple, said The Seattle Times, "promote full and equal participation of women in affairs of the city, to develop efforts and programs within the community for equal opportunities for women."

One of their earliest accomplishments was creating a city affirmative-action plan that explicitly protected women and gay people.
