Icon Grill After nearly 19 years, Icon Grill in downtown Seattle closed it's doors for the last time on Jan. 28. According to the restaurant, its lease expired and will not be renewed. Douglaston Development is proposing a high-rise tower for the property at the corner of 5th Avenue & Virginia Street. Douglaston offered the Icon Grill an extension until the middle of 2017 and discounted rent so they would have more time to find a new space, according to a Douglaston spokesman. The Icon Grill declined the offer, he said. The restaurant said it hasn’t found a new location but hopes to find one in the future. (KIRO 7) Dilettante Mocha Café & Chocolate Martini Bar The Dilettante Mocha Café & Chocolate Martini Bar is leaving Capitol Hill on Jan. 29 after 41 years on Broadway, according to Capitol Hill Seattle. The shop opened in the Fall of 2008, as a "bigger and better version" of the flagship location, originally founded in 1976 just a few blocks away. There are currently seven Diletantte cafes in the Seattle area but Broadway remained as the only chocolate martini bar, according to CHS. (MyNorthwest) Charlie's on Broadway Charlie's on Broadway originally closed in June of 2015 only to reopen in December of that year under The Lodge Sports Grille family of restaurants, according to Capitol Hill Seattle. The reincarnation of the sports bar and grill, which still featured pool tables and a pair of bars, was cleaned up but offered a nearly identical menu (including its famous mozzarella sticks) and kept the Charlie’s namesake. A note on the window indicated that ownership faced a difficult decision with its one-year lease ending and decided to close “due to the economic factors of the restaurant industry” as of Jan. 10. Charlies originally opened in 1976. (MyNorthwest) Louisa's Alcena Plum closed down Louisa's on Eastlake suddenly earlier this year. Citing increasing costs for operating in Seattle, Plum told KIRO Radio's Tom and Curley the business struggled to make ends meet. (MyNorthwest) The Shanty CafeJust before Shanty Cafe closed, its owners said they were taking "a break from the restaurant scene," KOMO reported. The cafe, located off Elliott Way at the base of Queen Anne Hill, opened as Violet's Hamburger Shanty in 1914. It became a favorite for breakfast lovers in the city. In late November, there were reports of another restaurant taking the place of Shanty Cafe. (Contributed) King Donuts The combination doughtnut/laundromat/teriyaki closed up shop on Dec. 20 after nearly 30 years. The daughter of the owners, Channa Hay, told the South Seattle Emerald the decision to close was simple. (KIRO 7) Old Spaghetti Factory Old Spaghetti Factory at Seattle's waterfront shut its doors for good on Dec. 23, after 46 years of serving heaping plates of food. The Seattle Times reports the site of the building and lot next to it were sold in 2015. The building is designated as a historic landmark, but the future of the site is currently up in the air. Before the closure, a server told the Times the restaurant was packed. The business served up to 1,600 people a night on the weekends, according to the Times. (AP) Ying's Drive-In After more than 45 years, Ying's Drive-In closed on March 27. (MyNorthwest) Anthony's HomePort Shilshole Bay The Northwest staple located along Seaview Ave NW closed after about 30 years. "We are grateful for the support we have received from all of our guests and the community," the company wrote on its website. (AP) Linc's Fishing Tackle Linc's Tackle on Rainier Avenue South is expected to be sold off in order to make way for a four-story office building. The Seattle Times reports the shop will close in March.
