Artist and author Doug Keith spent a decade in the 1980s and early 1990s sketching defendants, attorneys, judges, jurors and witnesses in courtrooms around Washington for local TV stations. He was found guilty of Viernes’ murder, and died in prison in 2008. (Doug Keith) Adult theatre operator Roger Forbes was tried in January 1984 for showing “obscene” films in Renton. As part of the trial, jurors screened 10 films that had been shown in Renton, and deemed only four of them “obscene.” Forbes ultimately prevailed in federal court. (Doug Keith) Ruth Neslund was accused of murdering her husband Rolf Neslund, who was known for having piloted a ship in 1978 that struck and severely damaged the old West Seattle Bridge. Doug Keith was flown by helicopter to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island to cover the trial in November 1985. Neslund was convicted, and died in prison in 1993. (Doug Keith) Kwan Fai "Willie" Mak was convicted of taking part in the Wah Mee Massacre, when 13 people were killed at a gambling club in the International District in February 1983.
