After seeing children of deployed military members in need of some extra comfort, Marty Alexander and her friends stepped in to help in a unique way. Fifteen years ago, Marty started Quilts for Kids, a group of volunteers at JBLM who provide comfort quilts for these children. Marty and her friends meet once a week to create these quilts, each starting with a piece of patriotic fabric. Volunteers who don’t already sew are taught to do so and Quilts for Kids has created almost 2,000 quilts for children to wrap themselves in while their parents are away. KIRO Radio and your community credit union, WSECU, are proud to honor Marty Alexander as a Hometown Hero and award her with $2,000! WSECU knows that when we join together as a community, we can do more.
