Egypts open presidential race polarizes nation

Associated Press

CAIRO (AP) - Egypts wide-open presidential election, which was in its second day of voting Thursday, is showing how deeply polarized the nation has become, with backers of rival Islamists and former regime figures each vowing they cannot let the other rule.
The impact of their rivalry goes beyond the key question of who gets to rule Egypt for the next four years.
An Islamist president will mean a more religious government, while many fear a figure from Hosni Mubaraks ousted regime occupying the lands highest office would keep Egypt locked in dictatorship and thwart democracy.
The two candidates that inspire the most polarized opinions are Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, the countrys largest political group, and Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander and Mubaraks last prime minister, who was booted out of office by street protests several weeks after his former boss.
In the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, the mother of a young businessman who was beaten to death by policemen in 2010 warned of a "second revolution" if one of the "feloul" _ a member of the Mubarak regime, like Shafiq _ is elected.

AP Interview: ElBaradei says Egypt has ways to go

Associated Press

VIENNA (AP) - Reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei hailed the end of "the culture of fear" as Egyptians voted for their first democratically elected president but said who wins is less important than establishing national unity.
That goal can only be achieved after Egypts poor are fed, have jobs and have roofs over their heads, ElBaradei, the former head of the U.N.

Associated Press

SRINAGAR, India (AP) - India should rethink the harsh military laws imposed on Kashmir if it wants to defuse tensions in its portion of the disputed, divided Himalayan region, a panel of Indian-appointed mediators advised Thursday.
But the panel rejected the idea that Kashmir should be autonomous, despite decades of separatist unrest and rival claims to the territory by neighboring Pakistan.
