Impact will be felt on every road, and every alternate route for two closures and some other roadwork projects this weekend.
Highway 2
This is the fifth time that the Washington State Department of Transportation has tried to close westbound lanes of Highway 2 between SR 204 and Homeacres Road for the repaving project. Weather has postponed this project for several weekends, and this will be the first of six weekend closures. All lanes westbound will close at 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Monday.
The detour route will be on 20th Street SE under the trestle. WSDOT says to expect delays on SR 9, Hwy 96, and SR 528.
Revive I-5
The other closure is northbound I-5 at the West Seattle Bridge. All lanes of northbound I-5 will close along with several on-ramps starting at 8 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday. In the past, we saw diversion on I-405 to I-90, putting added pressure on the Eastside commute.
Expect lane restrictions northbound I-5 at the Southcenter interchange. SR 518, SR 599, Hwy 99, SR 509, First Ave. South, and Fourth Ave. South along with Airport Way South will get you into downtown Seattle. Drivers out of West Seattle or Beacon Hill can use NB I-5 from the West Seattle Bridge/Columbian Way/Spokane Street on-ramp. This will put you into the collective distributor lanes where you can still access I-90, the Convention Center exits, and put you on to the mainline lanes.
In addition to this work, two lanes will be closed southbound I-5 over the Ship Canal Bridge on Sunday from the early morning hours until noon.
Highway 99
There’s planned paving work on Aurora between Roy Street and N 145th that will have short sections of the right lane closed at 7 p. m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Sunday.
Events like the Seattle to Portland Bike Ride, Ballard Seafood Fest, West Seattle Summer Fest, and a few concerts will add pressure getting into downtown.
