All fans passing through the gates at Safeco Field on Mariners Opening Night will be screened with metal detectors.

The Mariners say the new policy, effective April 8, complies with the Major League Baseball mandate to begin screening at all stadiums by the start of the 2015 season.

The metal detectors are in addition to the bag checks conducted at all MLB ballparks. All public entrances will be outfitted with the walk-through magnetometers.

If you don’t wish to walk through the metal detectors, you can opt to be checked by a hand-held device.

“Fan safety and security is our top priority. The Mariners and Major League Baseball are keenly aware of the current security environment at public events. We believe this step is necessary, poses minimal inconvenience, and ultimately will serve the best interests of all fans,” said Sylvester Servance, Mariners Director of Security, in a news release.

The metal detectors will be installed this week and be operational for FanFest Jan. 25-26.

Servance said they don’t expect the detectors will pose any major problems moving fans through the gates.
