Update: Conservative club back under review

Following Isaac Yi’s appearance on the Jason Rantz Show, he was called into the principal’s office at Henry M. Jackson High School for a 2 hour meeting.

Parents and listeners flooded the principal’s office with phone calls about the issue. Yi said the principal found his club’s rejection as invalid. The club’s status was changed from “denied” to “pending.”

“Hopefully, in the end, we are able to get our chapter approved,” Yi wrote to the Jason Rantz Show. “This is a big success for both the officers of my chapter and the conservatives in my school!”

Original story

Isaac Yi, a student at Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek, says he was prevented from starting a conservative club at his school.

Yi told KTTH’s Jason Rantz on Thursday, “Unfortunately, they don’t idea of this club educating people from both sides of the aisle.”

The club he’s referring to is a chapter of Turning Point USA, which bills itself as a student movement for free markets and limited government.

Jackson High’s principal rescinded the denial hours after Yi’s interview with Rantz.

Kathy Reeves, Director of Communications with the Everett School District, issued the following statement on Thursday:

The administration was not aware of the denial yet. Upon further investigation, Jackson High School Principal Peters has rescinded the denial and is asking the ASB to give further consideration to Isacc Yi’s request to start a chapter of Turning Point USA. He will have the opportunity to provide further information to the ASB to make sure everyone has a full understanding of the club’s purpose and intent.

The process does include the opportunity to appeal the ASB decision to the principal, which Mr. Yi had not done yet, although that won’t be necessary at this point as the ASB will be reconsidering his request.
