The truth about targeted fat reduction
By Gordon Cohen MD PhD FACS, Chief Medical Officer at PRO Medical at PRO Club
SPONSORED — It’s really a myth that fat can be targeted for reduction from a specific area of the body through exercising specific muscles. When you lose fat, you lose it across your entire body. That’s because fat is basically just stores of energy. When energy is expended, the fat is reduced everywhere, not just the area exercised.
This phenomenon was reflected in a 2013 study, in which test subjects trained using only their nondominant leg three times per week for 12 weeks. While the participants’ body fat mass significantly decreased over the course of the study, none of them achieved a decrease in fat mass in either leg. In fact, fat reduction was primarily achieved in the upper body.
The only way to really spot reduce fat is through medical means – invasive or noninvasive procedures. One method growing in popularity is Coolsculpting, a non-invasive procedure which uses a freezing technique to destroy unwanted fat cells in your body without surgery, anesthesia, or downtime. During the procedure, a non-invasive applicator is applied to the surface of the skin to deliver precisely controlled cooling, which targets and eliminates fat cells. The fat is eliminated over a few weeks through natural processes.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that reducing fat via medical doesn’t mean you’ll be healthier. That’s because we have two types of fat. Subcutaneous is between the muscle and skin, while visceral fat is inside our belly around our abdominal organs. Visceral fat causes inflammation in our body and inflammation is the basis of all disease.
Fat-reduction procedures target subcutaneous cells, because these affect the appearance of your body. If your health is just as important to you as your appearance, there’s really only one solution backed by science which is making lifestyle changes that includes exercise. Exercise is key because it helps you lose both subcutaneous fat and visceral fat.
When making lifestyle changes, it’s beneficial to have a medical team working with you to give you all the tools you need for success.
