European Union: The manipulative ex who secretively wants you to stay

Jan 21, 2019, 12:37 PM

Many of us have been there. The toxic relationship you would rather end, but fear the threat of repercussions from the manipulative, dominate partner you’re engaged with. Perhaps this is the best way to understand Brexit and the European Union.

They are more attractive to their respective, opposite gender. They have more friends to hook them up with other suitors. And maybe they’ll rebound quicker and make it publically known that they’re over you.

Here’s the reality: The manipulative, overbearing and autocratic tendencies of your partner are a front. They want to be in this relationship even worse than you do. They act tough and hard-shelled in order to make you think you could never do better without them. The minute you attempt to end things, they fold quicker than Rudy Giuliani in a televised interview. However, once they understand it truly is over, here come the fireworks.

Here come the Facebook posts criticizing you. Their friends will start coming after you. People outside of your relationship — who you never would have spoken with in a million years — suddenly have an opinion.

Am I taking this to the extreme? Possibly. But this is precisely what is happening with the UK right now.

Over the past decade, Britain began hating its relationship with the EU. After all, why should someone in Bulgaria determine how much you’re allowed to fish in your own waters? Why should a German diplomat decide who you’re allowed to let within your borders? The odds of being in a toxic relationship skyrocket when your boyfriend determines what you do in your free-time. Or when your girlfriend prohibits you from spending time with your friends while she is out with her own every weekend.

But of course, the left knows what is best for you. A globalized form of government is what they want for you, despite you literally voting the opposite. Now the countries in the EU have undermined the Brexit movement and determined it is not in Britain’s best interest. The media has attacked Theresa May for following the charge of her people to break away from the association with the rest of Europe.

May made a big mistake, however, when it comes to breakups. She prolonged it by wavering in negotiations. How much of a breakup does she want? A complete split, or more of an open-style relationship where the union regulates some things the UK can do? Do you remain friends with your ex?

Now the opposition senses insecurity and capitalizes on the blood in the water.

The reality is, the left, er, your significant other, wants you to feel like you need them. The European Union wants the UK within its bounds. It also doesn’t want others following suit. So from the very beginning, the EU wanted to stomp out the resistance. Once they realized they couldn’t, the media jumped right in the middle to tear apart what the UK had accomplished.

What’s best for the UK? A complete break. Will it happen? Probably not. Simply because, right now, the UK fears it can’t do better on its own than being a part of the EU.
