A fatal collision on northbound I-5 at Mercer Street in Seattle had three lanes blocked early Thursday morning. Around 8:20 a.m., all lanes were reopened.
The crash involved a motorcyclist, and travel times in the area ground to a halt. The resulting backup on I-5 extended seven miles.
“Northbound I-5 is not an option this morning getting into the city,” KIRO Radio Traffic Reporter Tracy Taylor said at the time of the incident.
Washington State Trooper Rick Johnson confirmed that the collision involved a single fatality.
The blockage at Mercer led to blockages across the city — northbound SR 99 was backed up from the West Seattle Bridge through the tunnel. Traffic continued to build on alternate routes on 599, 405, and I-90.
