Washington State Troopers caught 20 people in just an hour and a half for speeding on I-5 though Tacoma late Wednesday night. Troopers targeted drivers violating recently-enacted lower speed limits — 14 drivers were cited for aggressive driving.

The speed limit was adjusted from 60 to 50 miles per hour after eight semi crashes in a single stretch since September. Those incidents have been happening in the construction zone that starts in Fife and stretches south of the Tacoma Dome.

“The fact of the matter is that almost on a daily basis, troopers are responding to collisions through this stretch,” State Trooper Johnna Batiste told KIRO Radio.

The first of eight crashes happened on Sept. 30. Other crashes happened on October 8, October 25, November 21, December 11, January 17 and 23, and March 26.

Between April 1, 2018 and March 31, there were 1,574 collisions between milepost 130 and milepost 136, according to Washington State Patrol. Of those, 15 percent – 237 collisions – involved speeding.
