A homeowner shot a transient — a burglary suspect — in his kitchen on Friday morning, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators say a man shot the suspect once in the chest as the suspect was trying to attack him in his home on Tennis Court SW near Tumwater, Washington.
The suspect was eating food stolen from the home when the homeowner asked him to leave. The homeowner tried to close a sliding door when he was attacked, investigators told KIRO 7.
Police say the homeowner hit the suspect with a pole and then reached for his gun holstered to his ankle.
The homeowner called 911 around 11:30 a.m. to report the burglary and the shooting.
The suspect was taken to St. Peter’s Hospital with a single gunshot wound and is expected to survive, according to the sheriff’s office.
KIRO 7 contributed to this report.
