62K pounds of beef recalled ahead of Memorial Day weekend

May 24, 2019, 8:04 AM

More than 62,000 pounds of raw beef has been recalled across the United States ahead of Memorial Day weekend after tests indicated the presence of E. coli.

The concern stems from a single Illinois packing plant — Aurora Packing Company — according to the Department of Agriculture. Beef products from this facility were packaged on April 19 and shipped nationwide. About 62,112 pounds of raw beef products may be contaminated with E. coli.

Check the list of affected beef products here.

More than 40 items are included on the recall list, all of which will have “EST. 788” printed inside the USDA mark of inspection. Suspected meat should be thrown away.

The recall comes ahead of Memorial Day weekend, which is popular for barbecuing.

According to KIRO 7, the potential E. coli contamination was discovered by random testing by the Food Safety and Inspection Service.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacteria. Symptoms of exposure include severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. While some can recover within a week, others can suffer kidney failure. Anyone experiencing symptoms or suspects exposure to E. coli should get medical care.
