Four people were injured, including an infant, during a shoot out Monday night near Pritchard Island Beach in South Seattle.
KIRO 7 initially reported that four people were injured in the shootout: a 10-month-old boy; an 8-year-old boy; a 10-year-old girl; and a 27-year-old woman.
It was later reported by The Seattle Times that the 8-year-old boy was wounded leaving a Renton park with his family, roughly an hour before the shooting occurred. Renton Police described the incident as a “suspicious” injury to the boy’s side, where the mother said she heard a “pop.” It’s not clear whether the noise was made by a firearm, a high-powered air rifle, or something else.
The Seattle Police Department’s last report stated that officers responded to calls about shots fired, and injured bystanders, inside the park at around 7 p.m. Witnesses told police that that two groups of people began shooting at each other in the parking lot of the park.
More than a dozen shots were heard. The two groups then got into cars and drove away.
A mother was in the backseat of her car, holding her 10-month-old child, at the time of the shoot out. She was injured, as was her child, by the gunfire. They were transported to Harborview Medical Center.
A 10-year-old girl in the park was also hit by the gunfire. Her injuries were non-life threatening.
“All of a sudden gunfire erupted,” Jennifer Davis told KIRO 7.
Davis was at the park spending time with family at the time of the incident.
“My brother was like ‘get down, that’s gunfire,'” she said.
Davis said she then saw a baby covered in blood.
“There was a lady in a panic and she had a baby in her arms,” Davis said. “I just grabbed the baby and I started patting the baby down to make sure that actually there was no blood on the baby.”
The 8-year-old boy remains in intensive care in “serious” condition, the 27-year-old woman and the 10-month-old have improved from critical to serious condition, and the 10-year-old girl has been discharged.
Seattle police said there were no suspect descriptions available Monday evening and that the investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Any tips related to the shooting should be called in to the Seattle Police Department.
