Why you should skip the bed-in-a-box trend

SPONSORED — Buying a mattress these days is certainly easy, what with the simplicity of online shopping and deals on shipping. But is the bed-in-a-box that arrives worth the money?

While they may – or may not – be cheap, these mattresses are designed with shipping in mind. They must be packed in a way that keeps them narrow and light. Unfortunately, sacrificing size and weight can also mean sacrificing the stability of the mattress over time.

The innerspring mattress has been a standard for American beds since the early 20th century, while roll-pack mattresses that arrive in the mail have been around since about 2006, according to Wired. The new trend, though, has not negatively impacted at least on local retailer. One in particular has gained customers looking to buy a better bed after wearing out these roll-pack mattresses in as little as a few months; that store is Bedrooms & More. After all, according to the National Sleep Foundation, a mattress should last about eight years.

In fact, a traditional mattress typically lasts longer than a foam bed because it can be rotated and flipped periodically, so the bed wears evenly over time. Many foam mattresses can be rotated only on the base or box spring, not flipped. That means they’ll give half (or 1/3) the bed life of traditional mattresses, which people tend to keep for 12 to 15 years.

“A 2-sided mattress can flip and rotate. Therefore, it’s better for your body and your wallet,” according to Bedrooms & More. “Flippable mattresses last up to 3 times as long as ‘can’t flip’ beds. Bed-in-a-Box products fail even faster. … When you flip and rotate a 2-sided mattress regularly, you maintain the comfort. As a result, you’ll get years of consistent comfort and support for sleeping.”

A traditional innerspring mattress can also be better at accommodating different types of sleepers, including stomach sleepers, heavy people, and people with back pain. This is because the core in an innerspring mattress gives much needed support.

“An innerspring mattress uses a steel coil support system,” according to the Better Sleep Council. “ … In general, the greater the number of coils, the more points of support and the better the bed can contour and support the sleeper.”

Another upside to investing in a traditional mattress is the environmental benefit. Nearly 9 million mattresses and box springs are sent to landfills and incinerators every year in the United States, according to Nationwide Mattress Recycling. While everyone should recycle, most people don’t. That means, if someone buys a foam mattress every few years, that’s yet another bed that could end up in a landfill or burned.

In addition to recycling, people can reduce their environmental footprints by shopping with ethical companies. For example, family-owned company Bedrooms & More creates products for the home that are ethically sourced and sustainably made. The Seattle-based, family-owned bedding business also offers reasonable prices, so people can get a good deal while shopping in its no-pressure 20,000 square foot showroom or ordering a high-quality mattress online to ship anywhere in the country.
