Rantz: Sawant scams Seattle activists to fight for vandal

Socialist Seattle Councilmember Kshama Sawant is again delivering transparent political theater, this time feigning outrage over a vandal’s arrest, all to mobilize her cult-like followers in her fight for re-election. It’s a scam to bolster her re-election campaign.

Last week, a 13-year-old girl was arrested by Seattle police for vandalizing Seattle City Hall with spray paint promoting her climate change position. Activists claim she thought it was chalk spray paint, but apparently it was not. Either way, vandalism is still illegal in Seattle, even when done by progressives who, ironically, complain that white privilege keeps people like this teen from consequences for their illegal actions.
Now, Sawant is calling on her activists to demand SPD apologize for the arrest and fight to make sure this young girl isn’t charged.
My Council Office is calling on authorities to apologize for arresting a 13-year-old peaceful climate justice advocate, and to commit to not pressing charges. Let’s turnout Friday 1pm at City Hall Plaza to keep building the movement for climate justice! https://t.co/qnfhcT381Q

This is all political theater — and it’s a smart strategy for her deeply wounded re-election campaign.
This girl will not be prosecuted. She knows that. And it’s why she’s activating her base to protest. When this girl isn’t prosecuted, Sawant will claim her movement is to thank! It’ll inspire her base to fight even harder because they’ll see their leader as helping them win these battles.
Sawant has a history of orchestrating pieces of political theater to bolster her brand and office. Earlier this year, her office coordinated with activists to appear at a committee hearing to destroy the career of interim Human Services Director Jason Johnson. She then used testimony her office orchestrated to claim there was a ground swell of anger against Johnson’s nomination to run the department.
This latest stunt coincides with her struggling re-election campaign. She’s the highest profile candidate but struggled to earn a decisive first place victory in the primary. She’ll run against progressive activist Egan Orion, whom her supporters are falsely claiming is a Republican. He is not. He just doesn’t want to destroy small businesses in the district. That attack labeling Orion a Republican shows Sawant’s desperation.
