WSDOT zeroing in on plan to help congestion near Tacoma Mall

WSDOT is presenting the results of its study to help congestion near the Tacoma Mall on Tuesday night.

Problematic stretch of I-5 in Tacoma sees yet another semi collision

The agency conducted the I-5 Tacoma Mall Boulevard Access Study to look at strategies to reduce congestion on I-5 at the 38th Street Interchange and local streets. This area frequently experiences traffic delays, and the study analyzes recommendations for improving traffic flow.

WSDOT will be showing the results of the study at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center beginning at 5:30 p.m. The center is located at 4851 South Tacoma Way.

Attendees can come at their convenience at any point during the two-hour event.

Here are some possible fixes that could be implemented:

  • Construct a roundabout at the intersection of 38th and Steel Street
  • Build a tunnel along South 38th at intersection of Steele
  • Create a new off-ramp from I-5 to Tacoma Mall Boulevard
  • Reconfigure I-5 and South 38th as a diverging diamond
