Western Washington should expect ‘Wet-tember’ to continue

Sep 19, 2019, 3:49 PM

After a week of rainy weather in Western Washington, you can expect that trend to continue for the rest of September and beyond.

Rain, wind, thunder continues in Western Washington

Less than three weeks into the month, the National Weather Service notes that “it is already wetter than 58 out of 75 Septembers on record.”

Over the next eight to 14 days, the forecast calls for “cooler and wetter than normal” conditions across Western Washington as well. The latest data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association indicates between a 50 to 70 percent chance of below average temperatures for the region over that period, and a likelihood of above-average rainfall between 40 and 60 percent.

Longer term, University of Washington climate scientist Cliff Mass expects a mostly ordinary winter.

“The bottom line is that there is no reason to expect an anomalous winter in our area,” he described in a recent blog post. “Starting with a warm Pacific and the modest warming associated with increasing greenhouse gases, going for modestly warmer than normal temperatures here in the Northwest (normal being the conditions of the past 30 years), seems reasonable.

Seattle Weather Blog pointed out on Twitter that Friday “marks the last day of the year with an average high in the 70s.”

“After that, 70-degree weather isn’t the norm until June,” it added.

This all comes after a week of wild weather in Western Washington, highlighted by rain, hail, lightning, and even a funnel cloud. The NWS reported on Tuesday that Western Washington already had more than double the amount of rain considered “normal” for this point in September.
