Fatal police chase, collision blocks traffic in SoDo during Tuesday morning commute
One man is dead and another is fighting to stay alive after a police chase and subsequent collision in South Seattle. The incident blocked traffic on Airport Way in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood Tuesday morning.
According to Seattle police, a patrol officer attempted to pull over a Mercedes SUV around 7 a.m. Tuesday for a traffic infraction in the 1000 block of 4th Avenue South. The vehicle sped away, ran a red light, and rear-ended a parked vehicle.
It then started moving again, going southbound on Airport Way South, before colliding with a semi-truck traveling northbound at South Hinds Street.
“It was a head-on collision,” said SPD Detective Mark Jamieson.
There were two occupants in the SUV. One was declared dead at the scene, while the other sustained life-threatening injuries, and was transported to Harborview Medical Center.
The incident closed both directions of South Airport Way from South Spokane Street to South Forest Street over the morning commute.
Jameison says the driver of the semi was not injured. The investigation is ongoing.
