Buildings in Seattle’s University District are being evacuated as crews respond to a natural gas leak at a construction site.
Buildings evacuated, workers injured after gas leak in North Seattle
The gas leak began around 1:50 p.m. at the intersection of 45th Street and Brooklyn Ave NE — just a few blocks west of the University of Washington campus. KIRO 7 TV’s Alison Grande reports that nearby UW Tower has been evacuated. A worker told her that they could smell gas in the building before the evacuation was prompted.
Fire officials said workers with Puget Sound Energy arrived at the scene around 2:30 p.m. “If firefighters ask you to evacuate, please do so immediately. Avoid the area,” Seattle Fire said in a tweet.
Drivers in the area should expect delays. All eastbound and westbound lanes of NE 45th Street between Brooklyn Ave NE and University Way NE are closed.
