As kids get ready for trick-or-treating, the King County Sheriff’s Office has some safety tips to avoid any tricky situations.

Sergeant Ryan Abbott recommends going to a neighborhood you’re familiar with; ideally, one that’s well lit.

“Map out your route, pick the streets you know well, that have good lighting or maybe you’re familiar with people that live in the area,” he said.

Some costumes — especially darker ones — can be difficult to see at night. He says it’s a good idea to bring flashlights, or even use glow sticks to stand out to drivers.

“Just make sure they have glow sticks or flashlights so they can see where they’re walking, and most importantly that vehicles can see them as they go by,” he said.

He also says it’s a good idea to teach kids how to call 911 or call for help in case of an emergency, and suggests checking candy packaging to make sure they are still sealed before giving them to kids.

But if you encounter an actual ghoul or ghost, you’re on your own.
