Cities across the Puget Sound region are getting close to setting records for rainy January days.

While Seattle is experiencing just its 18th rainiest January in terms of total rainfall (as of Tuesday night), it’s actually approaching the record for most days in the month with measurable precipitation.

Counting Wednesday, the Seattle area will have had 26 rainy days in January, having seen just three days out of the last 29 without measurable rainfall. With two days remaining in the month, it could very well tie the Seattle record of 28, set in both 2006 and 1953. Olympia could break its own record of 29 rainy January days as early as Thursday.

While January is typically one of the region’s rainy months, a start to the year this gloomy is still far from the norm.

Heavy rain marks closes out weird year of Seattle weather

“Even for Seattle, in the dead of winter, that’s extraordinary,” said Seattle Weather Blog’s Justin Shaw in a recent blog post.

Reporting from the National Weather Service shows a similar trend across Western Washington.

The NWS expects to see wet weather continue in the Seattle area through the end of the month, with rain in the forecast for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
