A man is dead after a short chase and shooting Thursday evening involving Washington State Patrol troopers in the Gig Harbor area.
Pierce County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Darren Moss Jr. said troopers tried to pull over a driver of a Ford F-150 on Purdy Drive Northwest at about 8:46 p.m., but a short chase started.
Deputies said the driver of the truck crashed and rolled into the woods along State Route 302.
The driver reportedly fired shots at troopers who returned fire, according to deputies.
Deputies said when law enforcement officers at the scene approached the driver’s truck, he was dead. It’s not clear if the troopers’ gunfire is what killed him.
No troopers were hurt in the chase or the shooting.
Officials said the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department will be leading the investigation.
