Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer Mike Lonergan announced Monday that due date for first-half property tax payments would be extended to June 1, 2020. King, Snohomish, and Thurston counties are also allowing payments to be delayed until June 1 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

King County looks for property tax relief during coronavirus

Banks and financial institutions that pay taxes on behalf of lending customers will still need to meet the April 30 deadline in both counties. Those who pay residential and commercial property taxes themselves, rather than through a mortgage lender are eligible for the extension.

“We want to give what relief we can to many taxpayers facing financial challenges during the public health emergency,” Lonergan said. “At the same time, local governments are needed more than ever right now, and the property tax is a major funding source for many needed services.  Postponing the due date by a month is the best way to balance these needs.”

Pierce and Snohomish county officials said in their Monday announcements that those who can pay now are still encouraged to do so by the April 30 original deadline, or as soon as possible.

“We know COVID-19 has hit our economy particularly hard. And we want to provide relief,” said Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers. “These are not ordinary times, and we want to help out those who are stretched financially during this pandemic.”
