What are they building? New downtown tower to soar 40 stories

Seattle’s ever growing collection of construction cranes will be getting a new addition, as work has gotten underway on a new 40-story apartment tower at Second Avenue and Pine Street.

Each week we take a look at a new project popping up around the region in our series “What Are They Building?” This week, the new tower caught our eye.

What will be just one of many new buildings rising up in downtown Seattle will ultimately feature 398 apartments, according to developer Equity Residential.

The building will feature approximately 3,500 square feet of street-level retail, and 217 parking stalls above and below ground.

All those workers flooding the area for Amazon, the Gates Foundation and the dozens of other companies sparking the rampant growth in Seattle will find plenty of amenities geared towards them. A high-end fitness center, dog lounge and dog walk and club rooms with kitchen and dining space on the 40th floor are among the offerings.

The developers are also packing the place with a number of green features, including on-site ZipCar spaces, electric vehicle charging stations and bike storage for residents and retail staff.

Residents are expected to begin moving in sometime in 2017, with construction completed by the end of that year.

The architect is WTGBD, which is a joint venture of Weber Thompson of Seattle and GBD of Portland. Turner Construction is the general contractor. Magnusson Klemencic Associates is structural engineer.

Chicago-based Equity Residential owns and manages 41 properties with more than 8,200 apartments in the Seattle area.
