Rankings: Seattle tops for ‘coffee snobs’

Sep 29, 2014, 2:32 PM | Updated: 2:53 pm

Sure there’s a Starbucks on every corner, but a new survey says Seattle is tops in the country for coffee snobs who wouldn’t set foot anywhere near the mermaid.

Local online real estate company Redfin ranked Seattle the best metropolitan area for coffee snobs based on the place with the most independently-owned coffee shops per capita.

While the survey includes Tacoma and Bellevue, it found the highest concentration of independent coffee shops was in the 98103 zip code, which includes Fremont, Greenwood, Wallingford and Phinney Ridge.

“Seattle is definitely a city of coffee snobs. It’s just part of the culture. People here value authenticity, even when it comes to the ingredients of their lattes. They want the artisan, hand-crafted experience,” said Ben Hitchins, a local real estate agent, in a statement.

The list excludes Starbucks and other ‘chain’ coffee shops with more than 10 locations.

Following Seattle on the Redfin list were: Portland, Ore.; Boulder, Colo.; San Francisco; Denver; San Diego; Madison, Wis.; Austin, Texas; Minneapolis-St. Paul; and Sacramento, Calif.
