Ursula’s message for the Class of 2020: Be open to all new experiences
Jun 5, 2020, 4:05 PM
Dear Class of 2020,
I know this is not how you envisioned spending the end of your high school or college career. It seems like the world has spun off its axis. A global pandemic wiped out all those milestones you were looking forward to and now, you’re witnessing our country erupt in protests because of a pandemic of racism.
I’m sorry we’re handing you a broken system. But from what I’ve witnessed these past few weeks, you’re not going to just stand on the sidelines. No way! I see so many of you running toward the fire of racial injustice and using your voice to help douse the flames that have been burning for too long. You get it! You’re willing to fight to make sure that liberty and justice for ALL means exactly that.
Often, I talk about how I’m so impressed with your generation. It’s because you’ve already lived through some major events that have made you resourceful and resilient. And now you’re trying to launch into the next phase of your life while this country is dealing with a triple whammy of crises. You’re going to be OK. 2020 may feel like the worst year ever, but it could be the massive reset we needed to finally WAKE UP and work toward meaningful change. And think about it, YOU have the chance to lead the way!
My advice to you is to be open to all new experiences. You don’t need to have your whole life mapped out right now. Take time to discover what you’re good at and what you love because you’ll be happier in the long run. I have no doubt that you are going to be successful. My hope is that you always lead with kindness and compassion and look for ways to lift others up along the way.
Congratulations to all of you!
With love,
Ursula
