It got hot Tuesday afternoon: 94 degrees at Sea-Tac Airport.

The National Weather Service says we broke the previous record of 89 degrees set in 2013. Olympia reached 90, breaking the old record of 88 set in 2013.

But that’s still not warm enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. The experts at the Library of Congress say not likely. Most sidewalks are concrete and may only reach a high of 145 degrees. An egg needs to be 154 degrees to become firm.

Since metal is a better conductor of heat, your better bet is the hood of a car.

So why do we say ‘it’s so hot, I could fry an egg on the sidewalk?’ It’s not entirely clear, but the Library of Congress found the idea first appeared on June 11, 1899, in The Atlanta Constitution.
