K9 killed, suspect injured after officer involved shooting in Tacoma

An investigation is underway in the area of the 3600 block of South M Street following reports of an officer involved shooting in Tacoma overnight.

The Lakewood Police Department reported that at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Aug. 13, 2020, Tacoma Police officers located a homicide suspect driving in a vehicle. The vehicle fled and crashed after a short pursuit. The suspect then fled on foot.

A K9 track was started during which gunfire was exchanged with the suspect on South M Street. The suspect was struck, as was the K9 dog. Both were transported for medical treatment with critical injuries. The K9 handler sustained minor injuries.

The K9, Ronja, died Thursday morning.

Lakewood Police Department and Washington State Patrol are investigating the shooting.
