I-5 express lanes near Mercer closed after collision sends semi truck off freeway

Sep 23, 2020, 11:38 AM | Updated: 5:13 pm

Seattle’s I-5 express lanes are closed, after a collision sent a semi truck trailer off the side of the freeway. As of 5 p.m., the express lanes remain closed but all I-5 ramps to and from Mercer Street have reopened.

WSDOT expected lanes to remain closed “for an extended period” while crews worked to recover the trailer. The Mercer Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 and the southbound I-5 off-ramp to Mercer were closed but have since been reopened to traffic.

Seattle Fire’s heavy rescue unit was on scene responding. SDOT was also present “to mitigate a fuel leak from the tractor fuel tank.”

There is currently one minor injury reported to the driver of the semi. There are no other reported injuries.

Just after 2 p.m., Trooper Johnson tweeted a photo showing that more progress has been made.
