Since March, we have learned the best ways to avoid the spread of COVID-19 in public is by masking up, staying socially distant and frequently sanitizing our hands and personal items. As we transition to this new standard, restaurants have redesigned their business models to leave their customers feeling safe and secure. By implementing the use of digital menus and outdoor seating options, guests feel at ease while enjoying the company others as they dine out in Anacortes. However, as fall slowly rolls over, bringing in its wet and windy grey skies, outdoor patios will begin to close along with restaurant doors. With a limited 50% seating rule and the elimination of outdoor seating, it’s possible some Anacortes restaurants may not be able to reopen come the warmer months of next year. How could you make a difference and help these local businesses? CEO of the Washington Hospitality Association, Anthony Anton exclaims that, “… [Restaurants] are literally in a race against the season, and relying on all of us to continue wearing masks to help.” The Washington Hospitality Association is a coalition of multiple industry groups working to lower the case count by promoting mask-wearing. By simply wearing a mask when in public and respecting the six feet apart rule, we can help limit the spread of COVID-19 and increase the sense of safety for others visiting.
The Online Retail Experience
As we were forced to stay home, many took to the internet to pass the time with a little (or a lot of) retail therapy. Lizzie Johnson, owner of The Johnson Manor, a home and gift store in downtown Anacortes chose to roll with the punches and created new opportunities for sales. “Pre-COVID, we did not have much of an online presence. We had a website, but did not post much inventory to it,” Johnson said. Though it took some time to get their inventory up on the website, the Johnson Manor endeavored to provide guests with the same shopping experience they would receive in-store, without forcing them to leave the comfort of their homes. The Johnson Manor realized flexibility was key. They now have a great deal of inventory posted on their site and even communicate with their customers through text messages. Finally, The Johnson Manor started delivering their products to Anacortes locals with same or next day delivery. The Johnson Manor took this approach because they recognized a wide range of comfort levels consumers feel while shopping during a global pandemic. “We wanted to be more than just a store here in Anacortes,” said Johnson. By branching out with their new and improved online presence, delivery of products, and care for the individuals they come in contact with, the Johnson Manor sure does seem like “more than just a store.”
Stay with Peace in Mind
With the travel season cut short and would-be travelers sent into an indefinite quarantine, lodges such as the Majestic Inn within Anacortes were required to close until further notice. The Majestic Inn’s response was to make their own employees their number one priority during the multi-month shut down. The Majestic formed a food pantry that allowed furloughed employees to take whatever they needed in the form of food, toiletries, dry goods, and more. The Majestic even went as far as to continue insurance coverage during those furloughs. Then, the Inn took the necessary measures prepared their facility and staff for a much-anticipated reopening which did take place the first week of June. Known for their delicious brunch menu and gorgeous rooftop views, it was not a surprise to have an influx of guests back to visit. As for their popular wedding venue, it is now open to host small weddings (at a discount) for those couples who were forced to postpone this year. The Majestic Inn is excited to welcome in new faces and old friends to their loving community.
