Investigators arrested a man who they say stole a Tacoma police SUV, drove it into King County, crashed it and then fled Monday morning.

Officers were called at 5:36 a.m. to a report of a man trying to steal a car in the area of 1200 North Pearl Street. A Tacoma officer arrived minutes later and began running after the suspect, but the suspect doubled back and jumped into the officer’s patrol SUV and drove away at 5:43 a.m.

At 6:01 a.m., King County deputies received word of a crash involving a Tacoma police SUV and a car at Military Road South and South 276th Court just south of Kent. The driver got out of the SUV and ran away.

Tacoma officers and King County deputies responded at the scene.

An officer and a police dog tracked down the suspect. The 25-year-old man was taken into custody around 7:30 a.m.

This is a developing story.
