There’s a last-minute deal in Congress on a new package to bail out struggling businesses. Of course, nothing is final until the president signs it.

But it turns out what threatened to blow everything up over the weekend was the insistence of Senator Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania to permanently limit the Federal Reserve’s ability to issue loans during economic disasters.

Democrats called it a deliberate attempt to sabotage the next administration.

And yet, why would any party really do that? We’re a democracy. Any party that deliberately tanked the economy would be killing its reelection chances. Unless, somebody’s calculating that with the next election as far away as it will ever be, voters will forget.

So here what you do: Download this commentary and save it in your calendar for the week before Tuesday, November 8, 2022, which is the next federal election, to remind yourself about which politicians wanted to cripple the Federal Reserve during an economic emergency.

In fact, why not pre-load your 2022 calendar any time a party tries to sneak something in, hoping voters will forget?

That way, a week before the next election, your calendar will start dinging to remind you of what they tried to bury back in in 2020. You can then look at the list, check it out twice, and there you’ll find out who was naughty or nice. And then vote.

Ross: Are we killing car culture? Or is car culture killing the US?

I don’t think the question is whether we're going to "kill" our car culture. The real question is can we stop our car culture from killing the U.S.?
