No need to leave the house on New Year’s Eve this year to catch the fireworks show at the Space Needle in Seattle. The 2021 celebration is entirely virtual.

New system to bring heavy rain, mountain snow

The Space Needle says the big show will use sky-mapping technology and real video footage layered on an image of the Space Needle. That combined with digital artistic expressions create an “illusion of color and wonder.”

If you happen to see the Space Needle in person in downtown Seattle on Thursday evening, it will be lit in T-Mobile’s signature magenta color.

The event can only be seen on TV or streaming. KING 5 will carry the New Year’s Eve festivities starting at 11:35 p.m. on Thursday. You can also stream it online here. The party will feature “musical performances, celebrity cameos, a celebration of the community’s resilience in 2020, and much more!”

Last year’s New Year’s Eve show ended before it really began. Maybe it was a sign of what was to come.

The Space Needle had warned earlier in the evening that strong winds could force the cancellation of the fireworks show. That they did. There were lights, but even when they tried again at 2 a.m., winds were still too strong.

“Due to high winds, we are still unable to proceed with the fireworks display at 2:00am on January 1,” the Space Needle team tweeted. “Unfortunately, this calls for the cancellation of this year’s display.”

The city has also canceled all events and activities that typically welcome the new year at Seattle Center, including Winterfest, to discourage gathering during the pandemic.
