Rantz: Stunning hypocrisy from Kshama Sawant after promoting ‘rebellion’

After helping lead a “rebellion” and “uprising” last year, Seattle’s Socialist councilmember is once again feigning outrage for political gain.

On the long list of things Sawant hates, cops and Republicans are somewhere in the top five (it’s unclear where Amazon, Israel, and the general term “the establishment” fall in order). So after the shameful terrorist attack on the U.S. Capitol, and a misguided tweet by the president of the police union, the Socialist councilmember pounced!

Only Sawant called for a resignation for something she herself did — only worse — then defended.

Even by Kshama Sawant’s standard, her latest stunt is so stunning in its hypocrisy, it should bring shame to anyone who gives it a pass. Ignoring this behavior only ensures she continues it.

Sawant the Hypocrite

Seattle Police Officers Guild (SPOG) President Mike Solan, decrying police being caught in the middle of political in-fighting, tweeted about a Black Lives Matter extremist being at the riot in D.C.

The tweet gave off the impression that he was blaming BLM for the riots. But no such evidence exists and Trump supporters very clearly were responsible. He said that was not his intention, prompting some politicians and activists (many, though not all, acting in bad faith) to call for his resignation if he did not apologize.

Of all the politicians who shouldn’t have gotten involved, it is Sawant. But noticing the media coverage, the reactionary Sawant could not resist.

In a tweet, Sawant chided Solan because he “disgustingly speculated it might be Black Lives Matter or left-wing protesters responsible for the actions of the far-right mob in DC.” She demanded that he “resign immediately from the police department and the guild,” a position that she held before the tweet.

About that disgusting speculation…

Sawant the CHAZ Apologist

When Sawant was exploiting the Black Lives Matter movement to convince young white hipsters on Capitol Hill to join the cult-like, dues-collecting Socialist Alternative, she was heavily involved in helping set up the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ).

Though people were assaulted and businesses were vandalized, Sawant called CHAZ “an incredible area of peace and friendship and dignity.” She claimed it was “completely peaceful,” which was, of course, a complete lie. But having spent little time at CHAZ, she was merely speculating. She’s good at that.

After leading roughly 1,000 protesters into City Hall for what may have become a COVID super spreader event, Sawant bragged on CNN.

“What’s happening is this incredible movement… this uprising, this rebellion… is incredibly inspiring to the vast majority of American people,” Sawant explained. “But it is also threatening to the right-wing and the reactionary agenda of Donald Trump.”

The movement wasn’t incredible or peaceful. It was dangerous and deadly.

Thanks to Sawant’s activism setting up CHAZ, two black teens were murdered. The first one, Lorenzo Anderson, just 19, was gunned down early one morning. Though she had no information, Sawant… disgustingly speculated.

Sawant the Speculator

Lacking any details beyond what may have been a casual Twitter search, Sawant hastily released a meandering statement blaming the murder on “right wing” activists that weren’t at CHAZ.

“Though we await confirmation of the details of the killing, there are indications that this may have been a right-wing attack,” Sawant said in a statement, apparently unable to wait until she had more details.

There were no such indications.

Her statement was posted to Twitter at 2:50 p.m. Had she waited just a few hours, she would have seen the statement from CHOP activists explaining the shooting happened after a fight. Had Sawant’s office done more than a cursory search on Twitter, they’d have found plenty of video from the evening with more details.

One might say she “disgustingly speculated” out of school and should suffer some kind of career consequences. She won’t, though. In Seattle, accusing the “right-wing” of murder is as much a sport as hating on cops.

She didn’t apologize. She just defended herself, arguing the statement was merely “conditional.” It was longest “conditional” statement I’ve ever seen.

Of all the people to criticize Solan, Sawant should probably sit this one out.

In fact, given nearly everyone on the council is responsible for the establishment of an autonomous zone that left two Black teens dead — a convenient fact they don’t talk about while claiming to support Black lives — perhaps they all should sit this one out.
