Man clinging to life after accident near Seattle intersection of deadly DUI crash

A man is clinging to life after a car struck him in NE Seattle, just two blocks from the scene of a deadly drunk driving crash earlier this year that killed two people and left their daughter and grandson critically injured.

Seattle Police say the man had just gotten off a Metro bus Wednesday morning at 35th Avenue NE and NE 75th Street in Wedgewood. He reportedly stepped into the southbound lanes of 35th Avenue NE and into the path of a car traveling south.

Medics treated the man at the scene before transporting him to Harborview Medical Center.

“He’s undergoing surgery. He had heavy trauma to his body,” said Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore.

The accident brought back memories of the March 25 crash that happened just up the street. Accused drunk driver Mark Mullan plowed into a family crossing the street in front of Eckstein Middle School, killing Dennis and Judith Schulte, and severely injuring their daughter-in-law and grandchild.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn proposed Tuesday adding new automated speed cameras along NE 75th in that area along with four other school zones around the city.

Detectives continue investigating Wednesday’s collision. A police spokesman said a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) officer evaluated the driver of the car and saw no obvious signs of impairment.

Both directions of 35th Avenue NE were blocked at NE 75th for hours during the investigation.
