Zoo doo, Woodland Park Zoo’s composting program, is back. But the animal pen leftovers are so popular with local gardeners that it’s lottery-only this year.

“I can’t imagine anything better than zoo doo,” says an avid Seattle gardener.

If you have a winning ticket, you still pay for the manure. Ten gallons of zoo doo is $12, and a truckload full is $55. Lottery entries are being taken until July 9.

The zoo doo is composed of species feces contributed by a variety of non-primate herbivores, such as rhinos, hippos, giraffes, mountain goats, and tapirs. It is a fully composted blend of animal manures mixed with bedding materials like straw and wood chips from the grounds of the zoo. The zoo says it’s perfect for growing veggies and annuals.
