If you have already gotten an exemption from the WA Cares tax, you may have noticed an unexpected email recently.

The Employment Security Department told KIRO Radio in an email that its system automatically sent out email notifications over the weekend to people who applied for a WA Cares exemption.

In some cases, this meant people who had already been approved for the exemption received an email saying that their status had changed.

Private long-term care insurance all but impossible to get ahead of new tax

ESD said it is looking into why this happened, and will contact anyone whose account does have issues.

In the meantime, all other applicants can rest assured that nothing has changed.

“For now, customers will see the most current and accurate information about their application in their exemptions account,” ESD said.

People who bought private long-term care insurance before Nov. 1 of this year have until the end of next year to apply for an exemption to the new tax. The 0.58% tax will start coming out of people’s paychecks in the new year.
