In March, former Seattle Seahawks Doug Baldwin, Cliff Avril, and Michael Bennett unveiled a new initiative designed to raise funds and support for nonprofits across the region. KIRO Newsradio’s Gee Scott sat down with the trio this week to discuss the new initiative, as well as the current state of the Seahawks franchise.

As part of what they’re calling Champions for Change, Baldwin, Avril, and Bennett plan to have their new philanthropic endeavor host a series of fundraising events to bring awareness to local organizations doing work for families across the Puget Sound region.

Speaking to how it came about, they cite a close relationship to each other dating back to their days in the NFL.

“We felt like it made sense — it shows how unique our team was,” Avril described. “For us, we genuinely liked each other — kid’s birthday party, all 53 guys might show up. That’s not a normal thing.”

“Us doing this isn’t necessarily a shock per se, but it’s not the norm, and for us to come together collectively to give back to the same community we played in front of, us coming together is more in line with us wanting to keep giving back.”

“We understand from a different level of interaction and engagement with the community, and so now being able to utilize our influence and leverage to point that effort in the direction of some of these organizations who have been doing the ground work, we’re tackling some of the problems in our region with a holistic approach,” Baldwin added.
