Police charge man with DUI in fatal crash on I-5

At 11:00 a.m. yesterday, July 4, a serious collision occurred on I-5 near 145th St.
A 2001 Ford F-350 collided with a 2021 Kia Niro, causing it to roll. Witnesses at the scene describe the driver of the F-350 as making “erratic lane changes” and losing control immediately prior to the incident.

The crash investigation blocked all lanes of traffic and the backup was about two to three miles long at about noon.
Lanes reopened before 1 p.m.
A 71-year-old woman and an 81-year-old man were in the Niro, both critically injured by the crash and transported to Harborview Medical Center.
The man died due to injuries in the crash.

The driver of the F-350 tried to flee the scene on foot but was chased and detained by bystanders before being arrested by Washington State Patrol.
He is now being charged with vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, felony hit and run, and a DUI.
